She Didn’t Just Survive — Olivia Ulbricht Learned How to Live With Gratitude, Hope, and an Unbreakable Love for Life.

At just 3 years old, Olivia Ulbricht’s energy seems endless. Her motor runs all day, from her school days to her gymnastics classes, filling every moment with laughter and joy. She’s happy, she’s active, and, most importantly, she’s thriving—just five months after receiving a new heart and a second chance at life.

She calls the scar on her chest her “line,” a simple term that carries profound meaning for a little girl who has faced so much in her young life. But what Olivia doesn’t yet understand is the depth of her strength and the incredible journey she’s already been on, one that has transformed her and her family forever.

It wasn’t long ago that Olivia’s life looked very different. In June of 2024, her mother, Tiffany Ulbricht, noticed something wasn’t right. “Something was off,” Tiffany recalls, her voice tinged with the worry that comes from a mother’s instinct. Olivia, always full of life and energy, began to show signs of serious health issues.

She had trouble breathing, and her energy levels started to plummet. At first, doctors thought Olivia’s condition might be due to anemia, but Tiffany knew something was wrong. The next step was to take Olivia to Children’s of Alabama, where doctors could conduct more tests.

It was there, at the hospital, that their worst fears were confirmed. Olivia was diagnosed with a condition known as Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a disease where the heart becomes weakened and enlarged, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood. Olivia’s heart was failing, and she needed a heart transplant to survive. As the tests continued, doctors discovered a blood clot in Olivia’s left ventricle and a coarctation in her aorta—further complications that made her condition even more critical.

For the Ulbricht family, life as they knew it changed forever. From June 2024 to June 2025, Olivia and her family lived in the hospital. It became their home, a place where they fought alongside their daughter every single day.

“We didn’t leave the hospital,” Tiffany says. “It was just us, the doctors, and the nurses. We were all in this fight together, and the days just blurred into one long, exhausting journey.”

But throughout it all, Olivia remained strong. Even though her little body was facing enormous challenges, she never lost her spirit. She remained the bright, cheerful little girl her parents knew and loved. And when the moment finally came for Olivia to receive a new heart, it was nothing short of a miracle.

Five months ago, after months of waiting, Olivia’s heart transplant became a reality. The new heart not only gave Olivia a second chance at life but also a fresh beginning—a chance to thrive, to be the energetic child she was meant to be.

“We are so appreciative of the donor’s family,” Tiffany says, her voice filled with gratitude. She knows that while their family is filled with joy and hope, there is another family mourning the loss of their loved one.

The donor’s family made an unimaginable sacrifice, and Olivia’s second chance is a direct result of that selflessness. The Ulbrichts have a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the family that made this possible, and they hold their gratitude close to their hearts every day.

While Olivia’s new heart has given her a new lease on life, her first heart remains a cherished part of her story. “We had Olivia’s original heart cremated,” Tiffany explains. “We had a little ceremony to say goodbye, and we put the ashes in an urn that is in a cabinet in our home.” It’s a tender gesture that symbolizes the incredible journey Olivia and her family have been on, acknowledging the gravity of the experience while allowing them to move forward with love and hope.

Not every story about a 3-year-old needing a new heart ends in such a happy way, but Olivia’s story is one of incredible resilience and hope. Today, Olivia is thriving. She’s back in school, taking gymnastics, and running around with the energy of a child who has been given a second chance at life. “She’s so happy and so sweet,” Tiffany says with a smile. “She’s full of life, and we’re so grateful for every moment.”

One of the most beautiful things about Olivia’s recovery is how she has embraced her scar. She calls it her “line,” but her parents have been encouraging her to call it her “brave mark.” “It seems to fit,” Tiffany chuckles. “She’s so proud of it, and it’s a reminder of just how strong she is.” The scar, a visible sign of the journey Olivia has been through, has become a symbol of her strength and the courage she has shown at such a young age.

And the Ulbricht family’s journey doesn’t stop here. As Olivia continues to grow stronger every day, her family is filled with hope for the future. They are dreaming of a long and happy life for Olivia, one where she gets to experience all the things she loves—school, gymnastics, and maybe even a future filled with endless possibilities. As Tiffany looks at her daughter, she sees not just a survivor but a warrior who has defied the odds and is now living her best life.

Next Saturday, the Trussville Witches Ride will be held in honor of a nominated honoree, and this year, Olivia will be the special honoree. The non-profit event, which raises money for a deserving cause, will start at Cahaba Elementary School at 4 pm, and the Ulbricht family will be there to celebrate Olivia’s incredible journey.

It’s just one more reminder of how far Olivia has come and how much support she has from her community. The ride is not just a celebration of Olivia’s second chance—it’s a celebration of life, of hope, and of the love that surrounds her.

For the Ulbricht family, this journey has been one of the greatest challenges of their lives, but it has also been filled with incredible blessings. They’ve experienced the deepest sorrow and the greatest joy, and through it all, they’ve learned the true meaning of gratitude, resilience, and love. Olivia’s second chance is a testament to the power of hope and the strength of a family who never gave up.

Today, Olivia is happy, healthy, and full of life. She’s a reminder to all of us that every day is a gift, and every moment is precious. As she looks forward to a future filled with possibilities, Olivia’s story continues to inspire and remind us that even in the face of the greatest challenges, there is always hope.

The Ulbrichts are not just dreaming for Olivia’s future—they’re living it every single day, cherishing the precious gift of life that they’ve been given. And as Olivia grows, there’s no doubt that she will continue to inspire those around her with her strength, her spirit, and her unwavering love for life.
