Henry’s journey began before he was even born. At just 24 weeks gestation, an ultrasound revealed that he had Tricuspid Atresia. This was devastating news for his parents, who were suddenly faced with the reality of their unborn child having a life-threatening condition that would require immediate intervention after birth. Henry was born and immediately taken to the NICU, where he spent 9 days being closely monitored. During that time, his family was told that his condition was severe and that he would need immediate surgeries to have a chance at survival. After his initial stay, Henry was discharged and allowed to bond with his family for four precious weeks at home, where his parents soaked up every moment of joy with their new baby boy.
But their happiness was soon overshadowed by the realization that something was wrong. Henry was readmitted to the hospital after his oxygen levels dropped and his saturations became dangerously low. The fight for his life had only just begun.
At 6 weeks old, Henry underwent his first open-heart surgery to receive a central shunt. The procedure was a critical step in ensuring that his heart could continue to function, even with the challenges posed by his heart defect. For his parents, watching their tiny son undergo such an invasive procedure was heartbreaking, but they knew it was necessary to give him a chance at life. The surgery was a success, but they were told that Henry would need more surgeries in the coming years to allow his single ventricle heart to work efficiently.
Just when it seemed that Henry was starting to recover, another complication arose. On March 15, after undergoing the Glenn procedure, a routine balloon procedure in the cath lab turned into a nightmare. During the procedure, the balloon broke off the catheter and became embolized, traveling through Henry’s body in a way that his medical team had never seen before.
The complication was frightening, and for a moment, it seemed as though the risks Henry was facing were insurmountable. His surgical team, however, remained calm and determined to find a solution.
Henry was placed on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a life-saving machine that helped him maintain heart and lung function while his medical team worked to figure out how to remove the balloon from his body.
It was a critical and delicate operation, and Henry’s parents once again found themselves in a waiting game, hoping against hope that their son would make it through yet another crisis. After several days, the team was finally able to remove the balloon from Henry’s aortic arch, and just when they thought they could breathe a sigh of relief, another complication arose. Henry’s shunt clotted, requiring an emergency revision surgery.
In just two weeks, Henry underwent three open-heart surgeries. His tiny body was battered and bruised from the toll of each procedure, but through it all, he remained a fighter. His strength and resilience amazed everyone around him, from the doctors and nurses who cared for him to the family who watched over him with love and devotion.
