Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on the Australian continent for at least 65,000 years, making them among the world’s oldest continuous cultures. When British colonization began in 1788, many Indigenous communities resisted the loss of their traditional lands.
The joke imagines those early acts of resistance as the world’s first “STOP signs,” while the phrase “right of way came much later” humorously suggests that newcomers eventually claimed the right to pass through lands that had belonged to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
